It happens to be one of my least favorite passages. I want to invite you to take God’s Word and turn with me to the book of Joshua chapter 7.

BoxSan. To regard yourself and treat yourself as supremely valuable, as more valuable than God and more valuable then your neighbor, is absolutely unreasonable and absolutely sin.

Selfishness is contrary to the nature of things. Self-love, however, is not selfishness. Self-love is simply having a healthy regard for your own well-being. All sin is an assault against our holy God, whether it is done in public or in secret.

And God, who beholds even the innermost secrets of the heart, sees our sin clearly, no matter how well we think we have covered it. Paul specifically warned Timothy that men would be lovers of their own selves (II Timothy ). Please observe that this list of character traits describes the perilous times of the last days. Please observe that the trait of self-love is listed first in identifying these dangerous days.

The danger of self-love “The self was never meant to satisfy us. The self was never meant to find satisfaction in the perception or promotion of self.” These words belonging to John Piper shake one of culture’s loudest arguments: self-love is essential to contentment and satisfaction in life.

This desire to be happier is what Jesus meant by self-love. Therefore, self-love, so defined, is the foundation, not the aim, of counseling; indeed, it is the foundation of all human life. Some sins may be more prevalent in men, while other sins are more prevalent with women. But both sexes are vulnerable to hypocrisy. Ananias and Sapphira had agreed together to this act of deception (). Whether you are male or female, you need to guard yourself against hypocrisy.
